Description
ARETHA FRANKLIN was born in World War Two Memphis in 1942. Her father moved the family north to Buffalo, New York then settled in Detroit, Michigan when Aretha was five. C. L. assumed the pulpit at the NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH in Detroit’s Black Bottom. In the 1950s, he traveled the country, enlightening the Baptist brotherhood.
Reverend Franklin’s middle daughter graduated from the junior choir to featured soloist at the age of ten. A few years later, Aretha started traveling with her father, warming up congregations with her magical voice.
Aretha signed with Columbia Records at age eighteen and recorded ten albums for the label in six years but, despite a few hits, they failed to make her famous. When her Columbia contract expired, she moved to Atlantic Records in 1967. Her life changed immediately and she became an international superstar.
She was crowed THE QUEEN OF SOUL and reigned as one of the most popular entertainers in the world for many years. Following a downturn in her fortunes, Aretha signed with Arista Records and rebuilt her powerful career. In the 1980s, her vibrant work at Arista brought her to an all time career zenith.
Miss Franklin ran the road until the end of her life, after battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer for close to eight years, in 2018 at age seventy six. Her groundbreaking masterworks in music and her trailblazing efforts in civil rights, in tandem with the REVEREND MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., live on.
